  •  I think Pres Obama offered himself up as example (8+ / 0-)

to the whole lot of folks who were struggling with the issue themselves.  He spoke their concerns, their language so much so that Republicans would point to Obama agreeing with them.  Then Pres slowly "evolved" rather than a quick flip sop which would have been seem as too opportunistic and unbelieveable to the folks he was trying to reach out to.  Then after four years, he made his change, and it seemed like the time was right, and his thumb added to the scales was enough to really tip them for real and lasting support and change.

    •  And TOTH to Biden for (0+ / 0-)

making the first move for him.
I believe that was a very important "gaffe" on Biden's part, that paved the way for Obama's evolution.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!

      •  Obama was going to come out at the DNC (0+ / 0-)

so to speak, for marriage equality. I read this in several different places at the time. He had already evolved
so they wanted to just annouce it at the most politically useful time before the election (it was a matter of weeks or months not long anyway)

Biden didn't switch anything he just upset the political plan

        •  sorry I meant the Dem convention (1+ / 0-)

          when he was nominated.

I think Obama "evolved" long before. It wasn't politically expedient for him to say that the COUNTRY was ready for it. I remember listening to his very careful wording. I think he was not for marriage equality because he thought the country wasn't ready.

    •  Very good point and given that Obama originally (1+ / 0-)

came out in full support of marriage equality in 1996, I think your interpretation is correct.
