  •  Here's a link (29+ / 0-)

for a posting for an Information Management Senior Specialist posting at Xerox in Rochester:  https://searchjobs.external.xerox.com/...

There may be other jobs available with them in Rochester as well, but started with this one.  Here is a link to their careers page:  http://www.xerox.com/....  With some luck, she may be able to get something there.

    •  Chances are she has already applied. (21+ / 0-)

NYS brags on its 60,000 job listings. But marabout40 has attended seminars, emailed resumes, called and done what she can to find work.

      So far, nothing.

However, I'm certain she will follow through on this. She is following every lead she is given.

      •  I worked as a therapist and instructor in a (11+ / 0-)

housing project where the clients were guaranteed food stamps, cash assistance, medicaid provided they were either in a job training program for 20 hours per week or conducting job search for 20 hours per week.  But that was the mid to late 90s and people were not falling through the cracks that is happening now. It is horrible what is happening to marabout.   Social Services should be more streamlined and not such as bureaucratic nightmare.

I have a friend in a similar situation. He is 71 years old wand survived a stroke, heart attack, and has a brain aneurysm. Now his case is different as he does get social security and medicare but there is no available housing for him. Codes in his city just condemned the rental property where he lives because the landlord will not make the needed repairs. So they tossed him out into the street on the coldest day of the year. Fortunately his grandson's girlfriend who is very poor herself is letting him sleep on her sofa for a while.

He has applied for low income housing but there is a huge waiting list. Area Agency on Aging did send a caseworker but all they are doing is telling him there is little they can do except tell him he cannot live at a condemned property or they will commit him to a nursing home.

        •  That's just terrible! There are way too many (8+ / 0-)

          stories like his out there.

I hope he is placed in secure housing soon, but I have my concerns about that.

years with his health. And the list for subsidized housing is so long. He did qualify for a free lawyer through legal services because of all the issues with the landlord and city codes but the lawyer told him there is nothing he can do help. He said all he can do is sue the landlord and send a few tough letters to the landlord but it will not do much good and a lawsuit can take years. Yet the lawyer had promised to negotiate with codes about making a deal that is his client was able to make a few repairs himself, could he at least be given 3o days in the residence.  As the house does have heat even if there is no hot water. It has electricity and it is clean .yes the roof is leaking and there are some problems where he does need to get out of there ASAP.  Codes said they would indeed give him 30 days, next day, they changed their minds and the lawyer now says he changed his mind too and has decided not to help the client afterall.

It ends up the lawyers do not want to get into a battle with codes or the city after all.  Granted, my friend needs to find other housing but there is none out there. He cannot stay in a shelter as he needs somewhere to be 24 hours a day. Area Agency on Aging insists the only option is a nursing home until there is housing but my friend does not need round the clock nursing care and he would be taking up a bed. I told my friend if it comes down to it and because he is on portable oxygen, go into the nursing home on a temporary basis rather than be homeless.  He of course said he will but he is extremely depressed and I worry about him giving up on life.  He has been severely depressed and suicidal in the past but he is actually weathering this storm better due to anti depressants and the fact as a retired paralegal, the legal battle has him charged up and optimistic.

              your friend finds himself.

We, as a society, have to do better. I don't have many great ideas about how to deal with the greed of those who want to slash and cut social benefits. It is going to take many of us acting collectively to overturn the present situation.

The rich have devised clever ways to factionalize our society. Undermining our educational system, beginning with "set theory" instead of regular math was a beginning. Then, a step at a time, our schools have grown less academic and more prone to rote learning and segregating students who are learning-challenged and behaviorally challenged by labeling them as such, even with borderline children.

I think schools have been forced to do this by cleverly devised financial incentives, set to undermine public education. If a student needs remediation, that is more money for a specialized teacher, and more funding for the school system to meet the 'need'. It also makes the case for charter schools to deal with these children appear more necessary, and raises public taxes in a financially constrained era.

Privatizing prisons is another social wrong. Big money is going to corporations who run for-profit prisons. Once in the correctional system, it is difficult to get out, and even more difficult, in this very difficult job market, to find employment once you are branded a criminal in our society. This keeps people enmeshed in lower socio-economic brackets who would otherwise have a decent opportunity to have a decent life.

Ostracizing gays and demoralizing women are other tools in the bag of tricks to factionalize us. We have to be like the tree standing by the water and not be moved by these ploys. It isn't always easy when the rich control media and buy influence through elections.

But if we stand strong, eventually the social pendulum swings back towards sanity. The situation will correct itself. I hope it is sooner rather than later for people like marabout and your friend.

called and fortunately his Aging Office caseworker found a place for him to live until the housing authority has an opening for a seniors HUD apartment. He will have his own bedroom with a lock and he can use the kitchen and bath facilities in the house.  The owner lives downstairs and she rents to seniors who do not require or do not qualify for nursing homes or assisted living. This woman is an angel as she owns a boarding home for seniors or disabled plus rents out 2 rooms to seniors not needing the extra staff services.

                •  That is a wonderful resolution. (0+ / 0-)

I'm very happy for your friend, but I wish he wouldn't have had to suffer the fear of uncertainty about his living situation.
