  •  If this is not too personal, what is her age range (4+ / 0-)

I am assuming she is under 62 yrs of age?  I know here in PA, the Office of the Aging will assign a caseworker to help her navigate the system as well as provide free bus passes and help with employment if the person is over 55 years old.  It depends on the state as some states, office of aging will help those over 5o but sadly in too many states, the person must be 62.

How is her overall health at this point as she is recovering from surgery?  I ask this because with one of my clients who was facing this same situation and recovering from surgery...and was just in her early 50s was able to get into a personal care boarding home..ie assisted living temporarily while waiting for housing. She was a cancer survivor who just had surgery and thus qualified.

Medicare often will help cover the cost of temporary assisted living.

    •  She is in her early 40s, and I don't think she (9+ / 0-)

minds sharing her age. She's too young for much assistance that would go to her if she was older.

On the other hand, her health is resilient. She knows about how to eat well with little money, and is a runner and has other healthy habits. So her recovery from surgery was quick, and she doesn't baby herself.

I think the tumor formation was stress-related. At this point, she has been so stressed for so long she has good adaptive mechanisms in place. Those good coping skills have permitted her to be able to do things like political campaigning, even when her personal situation is so tenuous.

The story around her god-child, with whom she briefly stayed, is pretty amazing. The woman is deaf, and marabout knew her as a child and took her under her wing.

The child's parents were Haitian, and sort of viewed their daughter's deafness as a curse or a form of defilement. At any rate, they pretty much disregarded her and left her to her own devices.

marabout learned sign language to communicate with the child, and to help her to communicate with others. When she entered the woman's home as a guest this past fall, she found pictures of herself up on the walls. The woman proudly brought out a book of devotions that marabout had given her as a child, and even more proudly pointed out the dedication and inscription marabout had written for her.

So her kindness from way back when came back to help her a little in the present. But the woman and her family lived in a tiny space, and had little room or resources to share beyond the time she stayed with them.
