      I think some people over the years have made him out to be a sort of Robin Hood.

        is evidently not something for which there is any evidence, whatever the legend is. So I stand corrected! And that would explain much- if Billy the Kid killed only in defense and escaping from jail, I can see how people see him as much-maligned. The question is, can either version be trusted?
