  •  It probably is a matter of luck on my part (15+ / 0-)

that I got obviously physically sick from being bullied before I reached the stage of withdrawing to the point of considering suicide. I wasn't bullied for being gay (I wasn't obvious enough and I was only in seventh grade) but I had plenty of other things going against me that made me a target.

I'm really lucky that my folks took notice of what was going on and went directly to the principal of my junior high school. It's further to the credit of that principal who immediately went to the parents of the bullies. And mind you this happened in 1963. What that tells me is there is never any excuse to tolerate bullying.

    •  Pretty darned good. You had a pretty darned (10+ / 0-)

good outcome for the times, believe me. I was horribly bullied in the late 1970s, for nonspecific reasons. Teachers pretended not to notice. Parents sat back and BLAMED me (their own marriage was falling apart). Nobody thought of questioning my peers' right to be cruel.

I've paid for it ever since, in the form of reduced social confidence, restricted life choices. I'm still playing catch-up, in my late 40s. I'll get there, I reckon. But it'll be slow. (I've been saddled with quite a handicap.)

that kind of stuff happens. There was a gay kid in the city down the road from where I grew up, in Titusville, Pennsylvania. He literally got thrown down the stairs by his bullies...his ribs were broken and he spent some time in the hospital. His principal informed the parents that if he walked that way, talked that way, dressed that way, that's the kind of reaction he should expect.

I continue to deal with the effects of bullying, too, so I know what you mean. It's not something that you forget. In my mind, the bullying continues. It's vicious, vicious stuff.
