killed by significant other than by scary stranger. And with your/husbands' gun. But it may have saved her life in this case.

It's like epidemiology--there are weird cases where a pathogen can protect you, even though, statistically, the pathogen is the main killer. It may work out that way for you, it may not. Statistically, you are far more likely to kill or be killed than those without the weaponry. It's a free country, and will continue to be so: there may be mild restrictions on a few guns, but yours are certainly in no danger.

First, your "a thousand times" is not remotely supported by Bureau of Justice statistics although the "scary stranger" as you want to call it accounts for 22% of all homicides .  See page 16

Second, every credible study shows that cases involving the successful defensive use of firearms vastly outnumbers the rate of violent crime committed with a firearm. I've done my part, so please do yours with your own effort at research of the data on this point.

Epidemiology actually does apply here ... and it does not confirm your "rare pathogen" argument.  When drawing conclusions, this discipline relies on data and not unsupported hypotheses or ideologically motivated beliefs.

I find this hard to believe, especially the 'credible' part, but I am willing to read and learn.

        •  Here's an accesible Bloomberg/Business Week (0+ / 0-)

article from December 2012 looking at the reported ranges from a high by one reputable academic of some 2 million per year to a low by another of some 100,000 -- with a 200,000 to 300,000 "accepted" as a reasonable middle ground figure.

With 12,000 firearm fatalities per year pursuant to the Bureau of Justice crime data, this represents a relative frequency ranging from some 8x to nearly 166x for defensive gun use compared to firearm fatalities.

In my definition, either data point (and everything in between) equates to "vastly" ... by every reliable or credible source.  The article gives you enough information to research these studies more thoroughly if you wish.

stranger. The exceptions are those killed in mass shootings, which is what is under discussion. The rest of the murders are by gun owners against people they know. A tiny remainder exists.

              •  Yes, it does 78% of murder victims are killed by (0+ / 0-)

                people they know.

Here's another cite (but from the same FBI collected data)

                http://www.crimevictimservices.org/...

In 2010, where the victim-offender relationship was known, 37.4 percent of homicide victims were killed by an acquaintance; 22.2 percent were killed by a stranger; 18.4 percent were killed by an intimate partner (husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend); 15 percent were killed by a family member; and 5.5 percent were killed by a friend.11
