For starters, this was the replacement alternative to the transvaginal ultrasound that was proposed by the VA GOP, but pulled back once there was a huge public uproar. This replacement ultrasound doesn't do anything to dissuade an abortion - other than add a cost and time burden - as you can't see the embryo on these types of ultrasounds.

More interestingly, the guy running for governor on the GOP side - Ken Cuccinelli - is a truly awful, hard right wingnut. He's been as vocal about being anti-choice as they come. In this case, however, he was lobbying the Senate hard - which is presently split 50-50 with a repub casting tiebreakers - to have the mandatory aspect stripped. Word has it he's concerned this issue will be his death knell politically in 2013 when VA has its governor's election.

He's right. This is going to stir up a ton of women and progressives in communities in deep blue parts of the state that don't always come out in off-year elections. Its a loser and Cuccinelli knows it, going so far as to throw his principles on the fire to get elected.

GOP nutjob running for Lt Gov VA

The mandatory u/s also costs money, to add insult to injury. I hope that it IS his "death knell." The man is a dangerous freakazoid.

Sure, Cuccinelli is showing his kinder, gentler side to us NOW but we have memories and the internet to remind us of what he thinks about women who want to control their own bodies.  He is every bit as bad for the women of Virginia as the current Governor Ultrasound.

His loss in this year's election is essential not only for Virginia but for all other Republican states.  They need to change their anti-woman ways.  MANY states already have anti-women bills in the works.  North Dakota has 5 with the clear intent of closing down their only abortion clinic.  Gee, one of the bills looks just like the one in Mississippi.

Do what you can to keep this guy from becoming Governor of Virginia.  It is an important race for the entire country.
