it's all a question of where you live.  I don't have an AR for home defense, but I live in a small town, urban setting.  A shotgun is my preferred choice along with a pistol if necessary.

However, I have relatives in farming and there has been an increasing incidence of gangs stealing very expensive farm equipment.  They prefer semi-automatic rifles for protection of their equipment and livestock.

One solution does not fit all and for me or anyone else to suggest that it does shows that all facts have not been considered.

ps.  The value of farm equipment stolen in a single incident most likely exceeds the haul from a single bank robbery.

if a slug gun up close does not earn respect, then I can stand off and still hit a very small target with a very large 30.06.  I would suggest not confronting armed gangs if you are alone.  An assault weapon tends to make you think kryptonite is your only problem.

though it was 40 or more years since Basic and as far as few facts, care to point out which facts I seem to be lacking as I have been handling poachers, equipment and livestock thieves, coyotes, feral dogs, belligerent drunks and probably a few situations that slipped my mind?

Boris uses the emotions accusation when he has no other response.  At least that is how I read his response here and to me below.

"You have attributed conditions to villainy that simply result from stupidity"

          •  Sorry. I got responses confused with another (0+ / 0-)

set of comments on this same thread.

Didn't mean to undermine your obvious experience.  Sorry.

However, your choice of protection is one of many and may not be the same as what your neighbor might want or be comfortable with.

From a personal perspective, I think a shotgun handles most situations well, but with gangs stealing equipment in larger numbers, a semi-automatic rifle makes more and more sense.
