statistics and a study to determine that.

I don't have the answer for you as I am looking for a direction to finding stats for home invasions.

Part of my curiosity is driven by this diary and part by a conversation I had with a friend whose son just bought her a shotgun for home protection.  Now she lives in an area that is not densely populated but suburban in nature and to my knowledge, has no known issues with home break-ins let alone invasions. So that sparked my curiosity as to the need (which frankly she doesn't see either).

And in my personal experience where I've had discussions with police officers regarding a rash of crime in our area.  Crimes seem almost exclusively restricted to getting into vehicles.  I wondered why vehicles and not garages where there are more valuable things.  The answer was 1. need to have something easy to carry and conceal. 2. Going into the garage elevates the degree of crime and that is not desirable.    And to take it a further step, home burglaries (as was related) rarely involved weapons since that also elevates the level of crime.  Made sense but then again it was anecdotal.
