to the police to inflate that number?

Why would they bother and also risk whatever the police decide they may have done wrong.

Reminds me of the guy that called the cops because three guys with guns took his pound of MJ and the money they had said they were going to pay for it with.

He was arrested, gunnies still at large in a small town.

What was more inspiring in a dgu way recently was a woman alone in a remote house that was invaded by two goons, she fired two shots from her hubby's pistol near enough that they fled. Of course we don't know their intentions as they were not apprehended, we don't know if they were there previously and bought or sold drugs, if it was an attempted rape...none of that mattered at the time as they came in the broken door and advanced despite her warning and brandishing.
Those people that hate guns and say she shouldn't have had one should be happy the criminals weren't hurt, and after she fired two rounds from a revolver she had fewer rounds loaded, so it was more...fair maybe?
The article never said that she was firing a warning shot or aimed and missed...
For her sake this time it worked out for the best as she doesn't have to live with the taken life on her conscience and she still....lives. And so do the at large criminals.

    This machine kills Fascists.

Among certain communities, it seems entirely plausible that there will be some fraction of respondents who falsely claim that they used a gun to prevent a crime form occurring.

Remember, DGU is often seen as a heroic action by a fairly significant subset of the gun-owning society. Throw in a sympathetic and/or encouraging police force and certainly one can imagine ginning up the heroism of warding off a burglar or attacker by brandishing a gun.

Percentage-wise? Probably not a big factor in the overall number.
