and we always had a 22 by the kitchen door.  Common sense in a rural area, largely becuase of animals, possibly rabid.  I enjoyed shooting targets, and my cousins called me calamity jane because of my accuracy.  I know for sure that if some if some young person tried to break into my home today, and I had a gun, ( I don't), I would not be able to use it before it was taken from me.   The thought of taking a young person's life to save my own aged one would stop me too long to use the gun.

"break into the home to rape someone" scenario is orders of magnitude rarer than the general case.  A lot of people don't think about the fact that in the most common form of rape, date rape, odds are pretty good that you don't even have your handbag with you anymore by the time you realize something is wrong enough that you might need to be escalating the situation to the point of pulling a weapon.  Let alone have the opportunity to dig through, take it out, and use it successfully.  Even if it was in your clothes, by the time you get to the point of literally wanting to pull a gun on someone you may well no longer have control of your hands.  If they noticed that you were armed, it's exceedingly likely that you won't have control of your hands by the time they tip their hand that "saying no" is not an option for you in this scenario; rapists aren't idiots.  And of course this all assumes that you're even conscious at all during all of this; 2/3rds of rapes are conducted with the victim drunk or drugged.

The reality is that by the time it gets to the point where you're scared enough to break your internal resistance against pulling a weapon against someone who's otherwise acting nice toward you, especially someone you liked enough to be on a "date" with in such a circumstance, odds are it's already far too late.  Again, if you're even conscious to begin with.
