when you didn't need birth certificates to get your SS card, and driver's license, and go to school, get a voter ID, and all, I got them by virtue of being alive and my mother knowing what month and year I was born in.

But she never had a birth certificate or a certificate of Live Birth (which you get when you're born outside of a hospital and don't get an official birth record) made up for me - I never needed it.

SS recorded my birth as the date I applied for the SS card, plus the year I was born in. So SS knows the year I'll be old enough for SS and all. And the IRS uses my SS birth date.

So far, I have never needed it. Not having a birth certificate is one reason I fight so hard against requiring one for voting or other things.  I am not liking the concept of having "papers" - I have my parents' and grandparents' "papers" from when they lived in Germany and couldn't breathe without having to prove they had a right to the air.

I don't want that happening here.

Because I'm not sure you can get that without a birth certificate. May be something you want to look into before your driver's license renewal comes up! I'm sure there has to be a work around for people who never had one, but it's likely about 30 hoops to leap through, backwards, while blind folded and singing the National Anthem.
