  •  So, even though it was in fact the western media (0+ / 0-)

that fed into the false story you don't want to mention that because one outfit managed to get the story right?  The "everything is destroyed" played right into the dominant narrative about Africa in the broader media.  I suppose I shouldn't have focused on "The West" but more on industrialize nations media, which all share some striking similarities when reporting on Africa, especially the near complete lack of any stories except those of desperation and destruction from the continent.

On the other side of the coin, there's also been a virtual news blackout from any area that there is conflict in imposed by the French, so that likely played into the problem as well.

    •  It was not just one outfit that dug into (0+ / 0-)

      the story further.

Alternatively, I could buy into the proposition that the western media reveals that they were misled by early reports of the entire library of Tmbuktu going up in smoke.

Though that would have less tartness to it than simply claiming (as do you) that they were the active agents of distortion - which is, quite cleary in this instance, a distortion.

Next I expect to see claims of liberal bias - on the part of Fox News.
