  •  RI-GOV Chafee sweet but weak (6+ / 0-)

He may be doing stuff behind the scenes, but he is behaving basically as I expected: making nice, but not in any way exercising leadership on anything, the economy, 38 Studios fiasco, marriage equality, Sandy recovery, nada. "Wimp" is the word that comes to mind. Gina Raimondo may not qualify as a progressive, but is highly competent and is getting stuff done, which around here is a major accomplishment. And she could punch a big hole in the thick glass ceiling of the RI old boys club.

IMO pension reform isn't the same issue in RI as it may be elsewhere. Frankly there are huge problems with public pensions (way too easy to get the disability bump-up or the one-day-and-retire-at-higher-rank bump-up, way too hard to penalize people who got fired for incompetence or corruption or theft but still get their full pension). In most states I wouldn't support solving the underfunding by cutting pensions, but here, I agree it has to be looked at hard. Taveras has done that for the City (by negotiating with the unions) and as a property taxpayer I appreciate it. (Tax equity at the state level is the other prong.)

I personally would like to see Taveras serve a second term as Mayor before moving up, both for his experience and because he's doing really good work that our city badly needs.

...was a Don Carcieri thing, not a Linc Chafee thing. Linc only picked up the pieces on that one.

...that only serves to disparage someone when you can't be bothered to look for explanations.  He's been competent and undramatic, a welcome change from Carcieri, and is unquestionably more progressive than Raimondo.

Chafee wasn't responsible for 38 Studios; rather, he cautioned against it, and when the s*** hit the fan, he went after it proactively.

There is no bully pulpit for the Governor in RI.  Marriage equality, economic development and the like are held hostage by the legislators protecting their individual fiefdoms and supporters.

Raimondo is "getting stuff done" by punching down and implementing "reforms" that cause no pain to the Republican suburbs or the East Siders.  It would be entertaining to watch her try to put some daylight between herself and someone like Fung in the general.

"Nonsense!" said Alice, very loudly and decidedly, and the Queen was silent.
