  •  Damn... very sad. (12+ / 0-)

Was in Istanbul just this past August with my Turkish friend from college and a bunch of mutual friends as well.  Turkey is a beautiful country, and I'd love to go back.

It's really a shame for this to happen, with the loss of life and the negative attention Turkey will now get from Americans, who frankly don't know much if anything about Turkey and its strong secular history of the last ~90 years.

To my understand these incidents don't happen much (if really at all) in Turkey, so we can only hope the hysterics of the American media will be minimal, but that's probably wishful thinking...

It is done. Four More Years.

The people we were traveling with were very concerned about the drift away from their impressive record of secularism, established by Ataturk after WW I.

      •  It's illegal to criticize or mock Ataturk there. (0+ / 0-)

Lack of freedom of speech and expression in Turkey is one of the bigger barriers to their becoming a full member the EU.

For purposes of state, Kemalism / personality-cult style "worship" of Ataturk serves as a kind of ersatz religion.

The Dutch kids' chorus Kinderen voor Kinderen wishes all the world's children freedom from hunger, ignorance, and war.
