  •  'sovereign state' (9+ / 0-)

To argue against the sovereignty of individuals is to argue against the Constitution and the political philosophy upon which this country was founded. Liberal philosophy is that the individual is the sovereign power, endowed by his/her creator with natural rights. We gather together into communities and establish governments in order to more efficiently protect those rights, delegating to government the authority to use force to accomplish that goal.

We have balance of powers in our constitutional republic, dividing this authority into realms, some of which is exercised by the federal and some which is exercised by the states. Within those appropriate realms, each is sovereign, thus sovereign states, but ultimately the individual is sovereign.

This is the essence of liberalism.
