we at LPLP have been astounded to find so many cases in which children are taken for reasons that would never pass muster anywhere but indian country.

i highly recommend you read some of the stories on our website. the story of Janice Howe and her grandchildren is especially chilling.

they were taken while at school, and the reason stated in the social worker's case file was that there was a "rumor" that the children's mother (Janice's daughter) had been using drugs. that's it. a rumor.

how did she finally get her grandkids back? she got her tribe to accuse the state of kidnapping and threaten to file lawsuit.

i also encourage everyone to listen to the investigative series aired by npr in fall 2011.

I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. —Dorothy Day
