Why is it that a country that spends more than all those countries put together can not manage successfully two wars with third world countries? Are we really putting that money to good use? Seems to me we would have the same outcome with a lot less of tax payer money and debt. It's a bit sickening.

    •  Depends on what you mean by "wars"... (1+ / 0-)

If you mean the direct actions against organized military forces, our armed forces have done a fantastic job. Think how quickly they swept aside the Iraqi army (both times.) That's what they're designed to do and they still do it very well.

The problem with winning "wars" is that we keep trying to win occupations, which our armed forces are not designed to do (nor should they be) and which are inherently unwinnable in any case. Using our military this way is, of course, hand-in-glove with the neo-con/neo-imperialist view of the world that wants to bring eveything under U.S. hegemony by whatever means it can. This is what costs so much and produces long and expensive wars like those in Iraq and Afghanistan. You'd think that our military officers, at least, having been trained in strategic theory, would remember their Sun Tzu: "No country ever profited from a long war."

Of course, that doesn't mean that some interests in that country don't profit handsomely from them.

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory, tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat. Sun Tzu The Art of War
