where she was allowed to buy what she wanted.

I mean I love that idea.

But I am not a parent and I can see how if I was I would HATE that concept.

Learning to spend is important. Think how much better off the country would be, if the people we elect to manage our national assets liked to spend to keep them in good shape.

I have one son who likes to spend because he enjoys the transaction, the function of trade and exchange. Another spends just to acquire something pleasing or useful. Our daughter spends to impress. How people use money depends a lot on their basic personality.

I buy oriental carpets because I like how they look on my floors. I buy more because I like the merchant who sells them in Portsmouth, N.H. Then I give them to relatives. The rugs remind them of their peculiar sister-in-law who knows what colors they like. They find that a bit eerie, but nice.

a nice tactile contrast to stuffed animals. I like the silver because they don't break when they get dropped and they are pretty to look at in various light levels.

bachelor (thus far) son is much like you are re nieces & nephew.  When the first niece arrived, he too, became determined to be THE coolest uncle ever.  Thus far he has lived up to it.  Albeit with a learning curve re gifting.

When the kiddos become a certain age, he decided to gift them with a personal "shopping trip" on their birthday-just the two of them.

Waiting for a "certain" age was wise on his part.  It is something looked forward to all year.  Quality together time plus the kiddo picks out things they really want.

Despite the kiddo's parent's now very firm instructions re a dollar limit that annoys uncle son, fun is had & the kiddos have learned to make careful selections/choices.

Son the uncle mixes it up throughout the year with cultural events from cirque du soleil to art museums to introductions to foodie delights plus just fun stuff like parks, picnics, mini jaunts...

It is cool to be the uncle or auntie, eh?!
