Many of the conservative pundits are not as crazy as they sound.  They're con men, fraudsters, entertainers.  If Glenn Beck had lived in a different century he might have been another Joseph Smith.

The one thing they have in common is that they like money, and they have discovered the way to get it: to make people misinformed and very, very afraid.   Once you have people afraid and thinking that you're one of the few who can help save them, then they become much easier to control and manipulate.  This pretty much explains the modern, US, conservative political movement.

Now of course what happens is that after a while you begin to believe some of the garbage you spout, and you also spawn new generations who were fed this garbage with their mother's milk and they end up believing it to their very core.  That's we are seeing now: a generation that doesn't really remember a time before Reagan and they are coming into positions of influence and power, and claiming that traditional Republicans are "RINOs".  They believe the crazy lies that were meant to control and steal from the rubes.

The peddlers of the misinformation probably morally justify what they are doing by saying it's a free market of ideas.  But what they are also doing is creating a populace that is so afraid and so ignorant that it's literally getting people killed and threatening to tear the country apart, and all so they can have more mansions, bigger yachts, additional mistresses.
