    •  When you watch the Hagel confirmation hearings (10+ / 0-)

it's hard to imagine Palestinians ever getting fair shake from the US.

Any sympathy at all expressed toward Palestinians appears to be political suicide.

Hagel may be confirmed after all, but it certainly was a strong showing of what will happen to anyone who doesn't toe the line that everything Israel does is justifiable.

And you're right--"because Hamas."  That's the trump card that seems to make anything and everything else OK.

I'd be very nervous if my country's survival depended on another country's politics at any given time. Surely it can turn in, say, 50 years, which is a blink in a successful nation's history.

        •  Yes, that's why Israel's leaders are being very (0+ / 0-)

          short-sighted in their current policies.

Their long term interest is truly to negotiate a fair agreement with the Palestinians.

But for now they seem to prefer to kick the can down the road, buying time to create "facts on the ground" that ultimately make efforts to create a Palestinian state futile.

But if the US ever reaches the point where supporting an apartheid government becomes too distasteful, Israeli leaders will lose the whole thing.  Their one state will become a true democracy and demographics will ensure that it is no longer the Jewish State.
