  •  I don't think it is HR worthy... (1+ / 0-)

That's the only reason I rec'ed it, because I think it is worthy of discussion.  Israel gets cut too much slack because of what happened in the Holocaust.  Just because millions of Jews were killed in the Holocaust doesn't give Israel, which is really a distinct entity in itself, carte blanche to do whatever it wants.

All that said, I don't think Israel can engage in outright genocide against the Palestinians.  I don't doubt that some there want that (there are insane racists everywhere), but I think at the very least it will be clear that the world will not stand for that, if not the majority of the Israeli populace.

The trouble is, what is their end game?  They keep taking more and more Palestinian land, and then what?  The two state solution is already in peril.  Palestine is already of borderline viability right now.  So, if they keep taking more land, then what?  Will it be outright expulsion, because that will make Israel a pariah as well.

The one state solution is the end to Israel as it currently exists.  The real story of Israel is that its leadership is utterly incompetent.  They are not considering the long run outcome of their actions.  They don't have a long term plan, they just keep taking over more Palestinian land because it seems like a good idea in the short run.  Also, the right wingers there pretty much seem to believe that Palestine doesn't deserve to exist.

But in the end will they carry through with expulsion?  If not, I don't see how a one state solution won't come about eventually.  The smaller Palestine becomes, the more of an Apartheid state Israel becomes.  At some point it becomes impossible to deny.

And I knew the fainting-couch brigade would probably HR me into mud for the comment, but it's something that has come up in discussions in RL with my politically active friends who have any interest in the middle east mess.

Said with a joking dark gallows humor, yes, but there's a kernel of honesty to the comment that goes right to the core of the discussion.

I appreciate that some people are able to see past their initial (and understandable) reaction to HR a "final solution" comment and engage the actual subject.

I don't have a dog in this hunt.  I'm neither Israeli, Jewish, or Palestinian.  I'm not Syrian or any other ethnic or nationality that really gives a crap about Israel or Jerusalem or any of the "holy" places in that part of the world.

What the Germans did to the Jews  (and the other ethnic minorities they tried to wipe out like the Gypsies) was an abomination and should be remembered by everyone as an example of what evil men can do and right under the noses of a complacent populace.

No nation is immune to the forces that resulted in the Holocaust, and perhaps especially, not Israel.

Having a comment HR'd heavily for implying that basic truism is typical of the level of "discourse" we get around here on controversial subjects.
