  •  Lieberman kinda went out with a whimper (4+ / 0-)

not a bang (was really hoping it was over for him in 2006...sigh).

But yes, the Dem caucus is markedly better with his absence.  Man, I am so glad Lieberman is out of the Senate.

Lieberman, Ben Nelson, Conrad, Lincoln, Bayh...don't miss a single one of them.

    •  I only miss them (7+ / 0-)

if they're replaced by a Republican.  I wanted Conrad to run again, but since Heitkemp won, I'm perfectly good with his absence.  Bayh should have run again instead of being selfish, but we got Sen. Donnelly in the long run.

      •  Bayh should either have run again (5+ / 0-)

in which case he probably would have won, even in 2010, or gotten out earlier instead of leaving the party in the lurch with little time to pick a new candidate.  While Indiana Dems did manage to recruit Brad Ellsworth, a good candidate in a bad year, that required some string-pulling relating to election law requirements; they were nearly stuck with Tamara D'Ippolito (sp?), which would have effectively been a forfeit.

        •  No offense, but that's just wrong (0+ / 0-)

I don't give Bayh credit for much, but he knew what he was doing. D'Ippolito was nowhere near the signatures she needed. She needed 500 signatures from each congressional district, and from what I can recall she was only active in one (the 7th).

    •  I'd disagree with the last part of this (7+ / 0-)

As dickish as Nelson would be in action, he's far preferable to how Fischer will vote.

As annoying as Bayh was with his statements, he was a fairly reliable vote and only fucked us over badly once by retiring, which was inexcusable, but he was still far preferable to Coats and I highly doubt Donnelly will vote much more liberally. Both voted for HCR after all.

As inept as Lincoln was at politicking, she's still far better than Boozman has been.

On the other hand, obviously Murphy is a huge upgrade over Lieberman and Heitkamp won't be budget chair so Social Security is somewhat safer, but I doubt she'll be a huge improvement over Conrad whose deviations were mostly on fiscal issues (he voted against the Iraw War IIRC).
