  •  Just because first-gen types are conservative... (9+ / 0-)

    ... culturally doesn't mean second-gen types are.

OGGoldy has argued here at times that Muslim-Americans will probably flip back to being Democratic. I disagree pretty strongly with that view because it's fairly out-of-touch with how second-generation Muslim-Americans actually are. Yes, many first-generation Muslim-Americans are very culturally and socially conservative (something which is true of many, many immigrant groups). But immigrant groups, and especially non-Christian immigrant groups, are often strongly Democratic because the Republicans aren't so appealing when much of their ideology is white, Christian nationalism.

And second-generation immigrants tend to acculturate to their peers. Most second-generation Muslim Americans I know are culturally Americanized - most Muslim kids I know who grew up here partied plenty in college, drink, have sex before marriage, date outside their religion, etc. And even those who remain more personally religious often take a tolerant, live-and-let-live attitude to these things since so many of the people they grow up with - their friends, coworkers - aren't so socially conservative.

Again, none of this is unique to Muslims. I've seen it among Hindu kids, children of culturally conservative Hispanic or Filipino parents, and plenty of others. There's no reason to think that second-generation Muslims are going to be much more socially conservative or Republican then their peers.

I dated a girl from Pakistan who grew up mostly in the United States while I was in college, and yeah, everything you say is true.

I meant to say that OGG has argued that Muslim-Americans will probably flip back to being Republican.

Incidentally, one major reason Bush won the Muslim vote was actually because among Muslim Arab-Americans, there was opposition to the Clinton Administration's Middle East policies. People expected Bush to be more balanced regarding the Palestinian Question, given that Republican Administrations (Bush, Sr.'s certainly) had historically been much moreso.
