    The margins he got in almost all the states he won were too big to reverse merely by reducing his Hispanic margins in those states.

    Florida is the likely exception, since the outcome really was so narrow, and Obama's margins shrank compared to 2008 in almost all counties except the heavily non-white counties, which have more Hispanics than black voters or others.  But Obama didn't need Florida to win.

    But padding the margin with Hispanics still mattered.  It just made it all easier.

    And Cook is very wrong to think turnout itself was elastic.  It wasn't.  The sheer trajectory of the numbers of voting-eligible Hispanics ensured the increase we saw.
