    the invention of the 'modern' toilet, and the fact that everyone in London wanted one, precipitated a series of major cholera epidemics in the city until Parliament came up with the money (the equiv of $5 billion) to install a modern sewer system to go with it. Funded, not coincidentally, during a long hot summer when the smell from the Thames came thru Parliament's windows  every day.

      came from the cholera epidemics, and the scientists who finally convinced the bureaucrats that the disease was preventable. See that wonderful, wonderful book mentioned right above, The Ghost Map.
