a functionally operated NICS would be the single biggest deterrent. Outside of direct family, everything else should pass through the Instant Check. If nothing else it would at least cut down the criminal element from backdooring the legitimate sales of firearms. Good for everyone, knowing you are selling to a legal person, knowing you aren't buying from a criminal. But the biggest problem lies in the underfunded, and antiquated Information Technology of the Justice System. There really are thousands of Laws in effect already, with insufficient or inept enforcement.
Single payer Health with a fully funded Mental Health plan, and a National Policy to remove the MH stigma would obviously reduce those types of problems.
Ending the Drug war would immediately remove most of the inner city, and even some rural gun crimes. Especially reducing the estimated number of 50% in stolen firearms used in crime. Of, course, that would be once you add JOBS to the mix.
Just about any Democratic policy (i.e. Living Wage) would help our society reduce crime and violence. And once these policies affected everyone, even the rural South, people would begin to support the Democratic Party even more.
If you want Democratic principals to move the Country forward, trying to  ban anything to do with a  non-auto firearm and negative results will ensue.
