  •  We can, especially if we elect more Democrats (12+ / 0-)

That means working with and listening to the gun community, not the NRA.  The NRA is the only strong lobby, but they have failed their members in the political sphere. The only ones competing with them are even further right leaning. If Democrats got together and formed a legitimate firearms community, which included training, helping build ranges, lobbying, they would increase their political strength. But if they continue on the present trend, they will push away the people we need to include.
The Liberal Gun Club is one of those trying, Organizations like it need major funding, support, and advertising.

There's more than one gun community and they're not all equally worth listening to.

Some of them are natural Democrats: outdoorsmen value the environment, for example.

the media, the gun community is always portrayed in terms of things like gang violence and the effect it has.  They are smart enough never to try to tie this directly to the legitimate gun community, e.g. hunters, competition sports, and lawful self defense but it is always implied that the crime aspect IS the (real) gun community.  It is alluded to, erroneously, that the gangs and criminals are obtaining permits and walking to stores and going to shows and buying their guns lawfully.  This is done intentionally.  And so the legitimate gun communities become the targets of "control" and it pisses me off to no end.
