  •  interesting enforcements recently of ex felons in (9+ / 0-)

    possession.

In norCal pot country central, Humboldt county, already short 15 Sheriffs because of no funding, they recently gathered up the troops and trailers and staged a massive get together pre op meeting on the side of the one road leading to the small Shelter Cove area.

The local pot blog Lost Coast Outpost outed them in almost real time, commentors said they already knew before then, jungle drums. Or an undercover trying for street cred, who knows...

Also later in the comments eventually the Sheriff's office said they had canceled the event because it was a gun possession search on a known and dangerous ex felon.....who no longer lived there.

    Ooops!

Bad info, that job must just seem to suck sometimes, well, except for the money and all that door kicking hippy wrangling.
So that was a search for the guns possessed by an ex felon, and I appreciate they went to the expensive and dangerous effort, not fun wondering what they might find.
    ..................

In another article I linked to last week, the state of Cali DOJ said they had squirreled away 12 million from NICS checks..this was in response to criticisms from I forget where, but said if they had 25million, they could hire 50 agents and go to grab, collect, confiscate guns already on some list of known felons known to already be in illegal possession.
Or so they say...the 12 million they said was from background checks...did that get kept locally or shared?

Anyway, for those most in need of doing something about guns, RIGHT NOW, there's three things to harangue your elected representatives about:

    1.fund the NICS system

    2. pass a bill that closes big obvious loopholes.,

    3. fund state efforts where really needed to collect guns from ex felons not legally entitled to them.

That will fix a lot of problems.

    •  KenBee, good post. (6+ / 0-)

I'd like for us to give serious thought to who we're taking guns away from.

If you've a felony pot conviction, I see that as unlikely to commit violence, as compared to the misdemeanor assault, or "unlawful contact" for a fondler.

It's the criminal action towards a person, that trips my alarm, not one of our hundreds to thousand plus State and Federal Felonies for non-violent crimes.

"Benny the Bookkeeper" probably isn't a threat.
      "Knuckles Mahone" is.

      •  yes, well said (7+ / 0-)

and include  restraining orders...as well as enforce them, as well as warning victims and witnesses of violent felon releases...no contact AND warning, no release. Maybe even officially served by a court server.
Another very sad screw up by LEO to release a career violent offender who promptly tortured and killed a witness (as he threatened to do iirc) then ran over some joggers and killed one, with the victim's stolen car.
All sadly predictable, yet he passed whatever filters the prison and court has....no gun even used there.
