    Never having smoked, I didn't have the impression that nicotine alters your consciousness, except subtly.

    Smoking is perfectly compatible with most every-day activities. Drinking, no.

        can barely smoke in any public place, anymore. You basically have to go outdoors  for your nic fix, no matter what the weather is like, and then you can't be with be with people downwind. Or they gang up on you :)
