Seeing the damage that hard drugs cause, I've struggled with the question and have come to believe that outright legalization of some drugs, particularly methamphetamine is not a good idea.

I grew up with a guy who was heavily into ALL drugs by the time he was 16.  For a white kid from the burbs his trajectory was certainly exciting to watch.  He was of course  a reliable pot connection for the rest of us, but at the same time a cautionary example.

I asked him once why he was doing this to himself.  He replied simply, "I just like to get high."  No excuses.  He also told me that if one was on the path of hard drugs and addiction, junk was the drug to which all roads led.  That is, given the opportunity, all hard drug addicts will end up addicted to heroin.

This being the case, the best way to reduce the the damage to the lives of addicts and the social cost to the rest of us, is to decriminalize ALL drug use, simple possession, and small-time dealing while maintaining the penalties for trafficking.  In addition we need to provide no questions asked, medically supervised access to opiates for those tragic few who for whatever reason, "just like to get high".

The object should be intelligent, medical control of drug use, not continuing fruitless and socially damaging attempts at suppression.
