Most of the 'as I understand it' stuff you wrote is just not correct.

On the other note, it's tragic that your relative committed suicide.  Depression is a multicausal multisymptom disorder.  People often look at the depressed and consider drug use a cause, but it's more often a symptom.  Legalization of heroin could not have prevented his problem.  But laws allowing temporary involuntary commitment of drug addicts by family members may have helped.  The thing about depression is that it's always there.  It guides a person's life in ways often subtle but occasionally direct.  There are good days and bad days.  And all it takes is one very, very bad day, neurochemically speaking, for a person to commit suicide.  It's a very scary thing.  I'm glad you blame the drugs and not your relative.  Most people get angry at the depressed person.  That you see it as this other horrible thing that happened to your relative rather than as some sort of personal selfish decision of his/hers is a sign of your emotional maturity and love.  Once again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

and there is no way I'm going to take the time to list all the many and varied things done to help my relative including us paying for rehab and lots of other things.  But, it always came back to the drugs...always... and you may say they were a symptom rather than a cause and you may be correct.

OTOH, thats like saying asphyxiation was the cause of death in a drowning.  Hard to separate the water from the problem.

Personally, I lean towards thinking calls to legalize hard drugs are mostly from people who've used them and been punished...and/or sold them and were punished...and they'd sorta like to be vindicated.  I can assure you if I had met my relative's provider he'd likely be on a missing persons list somewhere.  He helped ruin many lives...knowingly...and no punishment is enough for that.

As an aside...Sorry...Mr XXXXXX or whatever your number is...time in jail doesn't pay that debt.

and I also fear the time I served didn't pay my debt.  My only "religious" belief is that karma will eventually roll around for me and it may not be pleasant, if that's any comfort to you.

For the last 40 years, more or less, I've tried to live modestly and do good.  I don't know if that is enough but its all I got.

and it sounds as if you have a chance at it.

      •  What an extraordinarily mean spirited comment. (0+ / 0-)

        Why, you sound positively Republican.

But it is comforting (in a perverse sort of way) to know that there actually is someone on earth allowed to cast the first stone.

There can be no protection locally if we're content to ignore the fact that there are no controls globally.

        •  I've run into your happy ass in other (0+ / 0-)

comment threads.  If it's mean spirited to accuse drug dealers of helping ruin peoples lives, then I am mean spirited.   OTOH, it may well be that it's a plain-as-the-nose-on-your-face fact that you'd prefer not to hear.

          •  I'd respond "have a happy day", but I have a (0+ / 0-)

felling that those are few and far between where you live.

Well, anyway, you might try it sometime

    •  The most enduring harm (0+ / 0-)

is that so many of the surviving folks blame themselves for not intervening, when there may have been nothing that could be done.

      •  I can't speak for others, but (0+ / 0-)

we did everything we could...as did others.  We don't blame ourselves because we literally were torn asunder trying to help and engaging "professionals" to help.  He infected his girlfriend with the Hepatitus he caught from his needles...we paid for the treatment for that.  We reasoned, pleaded, did all we could and nothing was enough.  He knew what he was doing and could not stop.  Could not!  He was ashamed...but could not stop.  Could not.  He had a college education and a good job, but couldn't pay his rent.  You know where the money went.  We'd buy food...he'd sell it to buy drugs.

Explain to me how legalizing this stuff would have saved him?
