  •  Never really had a bad one. (14+ / 0-)

First, we rarely have extended power outages, although that will probably happen more often, given the lack of money put into revamping and updating the power grid, and even when we do, I happen to live really close to a substation, so when other people in neighborhoods around me might have an outage lasting a week or more, I typically have power up again within 4-6 hours, so I've never (yet) even had to throw away anything from my refrigerator or freezer.

Plus, even though I do use a lot of electricity most times, I'm also able to function pretty well without any, as I keep textbooks and other reading material to hand, along with candles, LED lighting, writing implements and paper, and am a 'survivalist', in that I keep stocks of household supplies purchased in advance of need at sale times, and lots of canned goods that can be eaten cold, directly out of the can.

Our last outage was when a lot of wind sheer came up a few years back from Hurricane Ike, I think it was, and took down a sour cherry tree in the yard and a lot of power lines around town.  I used a hand saw to cut the cherry tree into firewood that's been feeding the chimenia out back for several years now.

In offtopic news, I just tried a 'pepper jam' or jelly for the first time, and it was delicious, and worked really well as a topping spread for medallions of boiled chicken.  Definitely one I'm going to get the recipe for and try to make myself in future.
