    at times, my diva friend.

My most memorable power outage story was that I was in the great NYC blackout of 1965 (was a child).  For us kids it was okay, but I think it was probably a nightmare for my mother.  My father was trapped in Manhattan and couldn't get home, and she was stuck in a 15th floor apartment with 4 kids 5 and under.  At one point she had us trek down the hallway (all of us in a line, with my mother holding the hands of my youngest siblings/carrying them and me holding the flashlight right behind her so they could all see where we were going, and the little ones wouldn't cry -- quite the adventure), because she wanted to check on a friend of hers -- a single mom with two kids even younger than hers -- who lived at the very end of the floor to make sure she was ok.  Then we had to go back.  Both times we made the trek when we passed the bank of elevators we could hear people trapped inside them.  She stopped and had us try to help, but we couldn't.

I do remember that she let us go out on the balcony  to see all the planes circling over (I guess) LaGuardia because the couldn't land.  And that the city scape was dark underneath them all.
