    people may well feel overwhelmed by their emotions. Of course, if they have no awareness of self and, ipso facto, no self-direction, then they probably don't have any self-control either and their instinct-driven behavior, habit-forming at the start, is prone to becoming obsessive at the end.
    So, if they can't stop themselves, then the logical solution is to rely on an outside force.
    But, relying on outside force to halt internal emotions is a risky proposition. I suppose redirecting them to an idol works for some.

    We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.
