  •  Personally, I don't think making lists is (6+ / 0-)

very useful, except to the forgetful. And then there's the problem they'll forget to consult the list.

If we want to rid ourselves of the menace of people keeping automatic killing machines with them, then the proper response is to stop the manufacture, importation and sale of the machines, as well as the ammunition. You know, like we got rid of CFCs and Dioxins.

The nice thing about machines is that they are man-made and we can keep them from being made and we can keep them from being fed. How about this for a slogan:

Starve the automatics -- Feed the children.

The NRA inveighing against lists is a distraction from what would actually be effective. They're protecting the border.

Although writing down the groceries list allows me to remember what I need even If I do forget to bring it.

      •  Your problem is that you are aware of (3+ / 0-)

your flaws. Self-centered, instinct driven people are simply unaware.
Take my mother, who lived to be 98 as an example. When she was 95 she had a bout with pneumonia, which rendered her somewhat delusional. It did not interfere with her talking, especially to herself. In any event, because i was fairly used to minor illnesses that were always greeted as the end of her life and then passed, I put a video camera in her room and left it running from time to time. She had so little awareness of her environment that she didn't notice.
Anyway, one day the camera captured her delerious musings during which she came to the conclusion that "I never knew how to live." That was a true observation, but it was almost immediately followed by "I wonder whose fault it is that I didn't know how to live."

Sometimes the human brain is on automatic. I suspect that's what musical or mathematical genius is about -- brains which are exquisitely formed to perform superbly in an area we all appreciate. We call these capacities talents. Most of us have them in moderation; some have none.
What, other than opening his mouth and spewing verbiage, is John McCain good at? Would he have survived, if he weren't adept at demanding that he be succored and cared for? Did speech in humans evolve to compensate for haphazard parentling? Are demanding infants more likely to survive and thrive than placid babies whom forgetful mothers forget to feed? Does it take a village because mother love is a myth? Humans like having children; caring for them is something else.

John McCain was very adept at crashing planes, being the son of an Admiral and taking and exploiting  every advantage he could.

        •  Interesting dichotomy (3+ / 0-)

between altruistic caring and competitive urge. Instinctive love for a baby only lasts so long, and once baby's personality insists on expression a tension registers immediately.

A lot of Freud has been mothballed but I respect his observation that love and erotism are related. And with erotism comes competition and territorial attitudes. In a culture like ours where most people feel the need to sublimate their erotic feelings, the underlying primal feelings seek another outlet.

I think a lot of mass murderers are for one reason or another completely cut off from their sexuality. The inchoate revenge fantasy has a parallel with that of the person driven to secret sexual behaviors. Given that this behavior is the exclusive province of men, it makes sense to wonder about gender confusion, which is difficult enough for the well-adjusted person to contend with. I've long been convinced that the 9/11 suicide attackers were unconsciously motivated by gender confusion, which had no outlet, and led to immensely hostile self-hatred which sought satisfaction through literal explosion of the self.

Mind you this is purely speculative unsubstantiated spit-balling here. I'm just a guy in his underwear for whom tapping a keyboard is one half-step above flinging monkey-poo at a wall.
