I am watching the BBC Parliament channel, where the result of the vote was just announced. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill second reading vote was 400 for, 175 against.

The House is now proceeding to a vote on the programme motion (which is something like a rule in the US House of Representatives).

Provides for a timetable, to allow two days for the further consideration of the bill. This is critical, because it avoids the  risk of opponents talking the bill out by continuing debate until the government drops the bill. The failure of the programme motion derailed the recent proposed reform of the House of Lords, where the government withdrew the bill to avoid losing other legislative business.

      The programme motion passed 499-55.

We are now moving to a third division, on what is known as the money resolution. I think this is needed because any legislation that involves spending public money has to be moved by a Minister of the Crown (although this is getting to the far edge of my knowledge of parliamentary procedure).

Marriage equality may add incremental costs but its hard to see those as the primary stumbling block.

The BBC Parliament channel confirms that the Money Resolution authorises expenditure on the bill. Passed 481-34.

Motion on deferred divisions passed by voice vote.

Something called a motion on carry over is going to a division. I have no idea what this bit of business relates to.
