...we, indeed, are WAY past the tipping point.

However, I disagree with you the Earth is in trouble. The earth is fine. WE are the ones in trouble. As conditions worsen, the Asian and Himalayan glaciers will disappear, fresh water will be VERY scarce, India, China, Pakistan and probably Russia will exchange nukes.

Either that or starvation of billions In Europe and Asia and in the Americas as well.  We have about 75-100 years to come up with a solution. But even if all excess carbon were stopped today and not resumed, the cascade effect has begun and will effect climate for at least that long. And the Holocene Extinction will continue.

You think China is stopping their coal production? Has Brasil stopped the mass obliteration of the rainforest? Has ANYONE really done anything meaningful enough to offset the rest of us hypoctitical slobs?

    Adapt.

We are toast as the dominant species. Man will survive in pockets. The Earth will have cured itself of a nasty virus and will heal itself in a few hundred years.

...will be gone in a couple of hundred years. In 1000 years you would be hard-pressed to find signs of mankind from space. Nuclear reactors would show on instuments, but aside from a few monuments (pyramids, Mt Rushmore) there won't be much to say we were here.

Of course, this is based on all people falling off the face of the earth all at once.  Preferably today.
