  •  This has been going on for decades. (4+ / 0-)

I wrote textbooks for a small publisher in the 1980s and 1990s.  Of course we had to publish for the Texas market. In the early 1980s we were told we could not mention AIDS in a high school health book but managed to slip it into the teacher's edition which the teachers could tear out and photocopy for their students.
Once when I was writing an economics textbook, I was instructed not to mention the word "union" in the chapter about "organized labor."  I said that was impossible and ridiculous and went ahead and used the word, liberally.  I don't know if the publisher took it out.
The anti-education nuts in Texas just get sillier and sillier. They're in danger of running out of topics to censor.  I'm sure most teachers are doing their best to subvert them.

    •  We're also the state with the highest (3+ / 0-)

level of income inequality, the lowest median wage, the highest number of uninsured children, the worst teenage birth rate.

At some point, when all the major businesses leave because they can't find workers with high enough IQ's to flip burgers, someone in power might wish they hadn't been quite so enthusiastic about hating education and fearing taxes.  Perry is trying to lure California companies to Texas because of low tax rates and low wages.  If they have to bring their upper management people the traffic, schools, food prices, and general 3rd world nation ambiance will drive them out quickly.

I'm not looking for a love that will lift me up and carry me away. A love that will stroll alongside and make a few amusing comments will suffice.

these states in their race to the bottom. Though, for now, TX continues to be one of the fastest growing states. People can vote with their feet by leaving.

before you buy the Perry come-on. Back in the 60's I moved to Tampa from Boston on the basis of my new boss, who had done the same, telling me that his kids were in a school tougher than the one they had attended in L. A.  He was living in the "establishment" area where  the school got the best, I lived in a suburb where my kid was bussed to a  lower income area, where she was soon skipped a grade. Fortunately we returned to Boston in two years. If I were in the same position today, there is no way I would move to a state whose schools are run by anything as dippy as the Texas system.
