  •  I think the number of votes matters... (0+ / 0-)

If Hagel gets a party line vote - give or take a few GOP votes I don't like the message that sends.

Remember when any Dem who would question the Iraq war was mauled by the press and GOP for sending the wrong message to the troops - well a partisan line confirmation here will send the same message.

I hope Hagel gets at least 70 votes out of the Senate.

    •  beyond the media making an issue (0+ / 0-)

of a low number of "yes" votes, I dont think it is a big deal.

A lot depends, of course, on how Hagel performs as Defense Secretary. But I dont think the vote count has much impact on that.

70 votes would mean 15 GOP senators would have to vote yes, assuming no Dem defections. Getting 15 GOP senators seems tough, but who knows. Cochran was kind of random as a "yes" vote, so there might others like him who will also vote yes.

    •  It would be nice... (0+ / 0-)

But on the other hand - nobody really gives a shit how many votes they get in the end.

    •  It could, but a win is a win. (0+ / 0-)

I don't mean to discount what you wrote, but there will still be egg on Republican's faces if Hagel gets confirmed.

They can't keep pulling this kind of crap for every nominee. This fight looked bad enough. Imagine this happening for every nominee, even for the Dept. of Transportation. Goodness!
