is the Latino backlash to some of the worst excesses in how CA treated them in the past.

The Latino mobilization in CA has transformed the politics here hugely in the time I've lived here (from 1984 to present).     I never thought I'd want to thank Pete Wilson for anything, but he really did light a fire under that voting block.

I like to think our other ethnic types have become more tolerant, liberal etc in the time I've been there too.  But my state gave us Arnold not all that long ago in a quasi-legal recall election, and you only have to look at our proposition list and the results each election to know there is still a strong strain of stupid here.

But the last few years the trend has been all in the right direction, even while a lot of the rest of the country went crazy.

I lived in California when Proposition 187 was passed in 1994.  I ended up moving to Texas to go to grad school in 1995.

In Texas, the GOP has exhibited extremely harsh rhetoric towards Hispanics, but avoided the dumb impulse to really go further than that.  Because they know if they did, the Hispanic vote would become a lot more motivated quickly, as was the case in California.

The trend here can be good as well.  Texas is a minority majority state, but we have been plagued by a fairly dead Texas Democratic Party.  We should be doing a lot better than we are.  And with the new Battleground Texas effort led by Jeremy Bird, we will hopefully make progress

Latinos are projected to be a plurality of the population in 2014.

The most violent element in society is ignorance.
