Our community is in the midst of a serious discussion about mental health, as a result of Sandy Hook and earlier shootings. Consequently there've been quite a few columns and news stories addressing the issue.

Depression makes no sense, but it has the vicious, mindless cunning of a self-protective parasite. Above all else, I wanted to hide it, keep it secret, pretend there wasn’t a destructive alien driving my emotional bus.

So I pretended, a task analogous to walking around with an untreated broken leg while behaving as if everything is double-thumbs-up. It hurt, and it wore me out.

I harbored the bizarre notion that the people who knew me best would understand, and perhaps even be relieved at my passing — which was and is a delusional lie.
What I suffered from was real. It was also temporary and entirely treatable.
