  •  As we continue to reward greed, (9+ / 0-)

people are going to continue to give a shit less about others.
I can remember when working people actually cared (more) about the poor. I can remember when one employers might say to another employer something like “Don’t you think it’s about time you gave your guy a bump in pay, since you’ve had him this long”? Now they brag to each other about how cheap they can get people to work for them.
As Dukakis once said “The fish rots from the head down” and as long as we keep rewarding the sorriest people (i.e. banksters, criminals who hold government offices etc.) those ’examples’ will be set/reinforced and the general public will just keep getting sorrier (because the sorriest people are getting all the favors). I think this mess has to be cleaned up at the top before we can make any meaningful/sustainable progress at the bottom (i.e. “The fish rots from the head down”).
Sometimes I think (jokingly) that I must be the main character of a Twilight Zone episode in which nobody really gives a shit about anybody anymore. One time I heard a wealthy farmer gripe about “welfare”, it hit me the wrong way so I asked “Do you pay your people enough to where if they get a serious illness they won’t have to run right then to get on Medicaid”?. I already knew that some of his workers were drawing disability (and probably working for cash). How can this guy gripe about “welfare”? If anything, his operation is being subsidized by “welfare” (so he don’t have to pay his people enough to actually live on). There’s a lot of not-give-a-shit out there. I’ve even read on this site about the poor being ‘freeloaders’ on healthcare.
I appreciate everything that Don Hazen and everyone else does (including myself) to help the poor, but I still think that it’s all just “symptom relief” until we start insisting on getting the correct examples set by our ‘leaders’ and others at the top.
