My particular quirk is that I love long solo motorcycle trips. I ride cross-country every summer, or at least a time zone or two away from my home. Riding is definitely a second-half-of-life activity for me, having taken up the hobby after my fortieth birthday.

The vast majority of people I've told this find something in that concept that's appalling. A woman, riding a motorcycle? A middle-aged woman, riding a motorcycle? A middle-aged woman riding a motorcycle, all that distance? A middle-aged woman riding a motorcycle all that distance, ALONE? I get the "aren't you afraid?" question all the time in gas stations. I usually laugh, but not unkindly. Motorcycling has risks (none of which are increased by the fact that I am female, imho) - I do the things I can to minimize them, and ride on, living a joyful life on the road. Some of my best days have been spent chasing a horizon across the beautiful open areas of the U.S., feeling alive to my core.
