  •  Those B28s and W28s are OLD! (17+ / 0-)

I was a AF Weapons Officer AFSC4625a during Vietnam era, mostly worked nukes, both storage and maintenance, and logistical maintenance. Even in the late 60s, early 70s we were mostly working with W61s/B61s. I wasn't in SAC so we didn't have W28s much, but cycled them thru the logistical support (at that time I worked for AFLC - Logistics Command).

So I was upstream of the diarist's part in the kabuki. My grunts at the MMS (Munitions Maintenance Squadron) repaired and tested the warheads and delivered them to the flight line when the horn went off, but alert staging was different for USAFE and SAC.

At the forward USAFE base I was at, our alert planes were looking toward the black sea in case of attack on our radars or bomb dumps like mine, so we had F4s with missiles and rockets ready to go, and, uh, more powerful weapons as a follow-up...

I still have friends at Barksdale. Few years back when a B52 from Minot AFB, Flew down there with active warheads loaded (cruise missiles, I think, W80) I thought of all the protocols that were supposed to prevent that from ever happening by mistake, and decided that it probably wasn't a mistake, I never could find how who might have ordered that. My friends at Barksdale said everyone was mum about the whole thing on base and it blew over (i.e off the front page) after about 10 days..... but something was going on, I could tell.... And besides pilots, there must have been some munitions types who lost their jobs....

    •  We also had B83's (9+ / 0-)

which I suspect were in the process of replacing the B28 weapons at the time.

The B53's were still in the inventory but we didn't have any at Barksdale. I think Minot still sat alert with them.

If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!

I've been trough Nuke Inspections and on a base that failed ORI once (Operational Readiness Inspection).

I hate to say it, but as I suspected the Barksdale report placed a lot of blame on the Munitions people, and speaking from personal experience, there's no excuse for that - unless people, officers and NCOs alike, are not paying attention.

That said, with minuteman missiles and Nuke Subs out there, I'm not sure what we would use B-52s for anymore...

This is now 4th Gen warfare, the cold war is gone....We're not quite as MAD as we used to be...

but IF there is any deterrent from nukes and B-52s, it can only work if every piece of the deterrent functions. After 40+ years at this, how could it go so wrong? -  the Barksdale report sort of makes me imagine The Marx Brothers in "a Day at a SAC base...."

    •  base commander and pilot were canned iirc (0+ / 0-)

there was some sufferage but then the idjits started spreading ct's that Cheney did it to steal a nuke for a false flag event and on and on.

There were two original articles about it in AF Times or some type paper like that that were quoted...it was a few computers ago, :>
