They towed her to Hawaii, and she lies in 6000' of water from what my former chief told me. Neither of us thought she deserved that end either.

Cool idea though, and my hat's off to the late Ms. Amlie for coming up with that idea.

We had a "Campbell" on the list of hulls sunk for June.

But apparently this USCGC Campbell was used for target practice out mid-ocean. 5,100 meters.

The ordinary fish with normal eyes would have loved her.

to reflect the 5100 meters vs. 6000 feet deep! It has been a while... ;)

When the Discovery channel (more than a few years ago) was still somewhat interesting, I watched a show about cruise missiles and they had a brief, grainy piece of footage that showed a missile slamming into a white ship. Damned if that target didn't have the visual profile of my ship! Compared to the Navy's endless gray, only CG and NOAA ships are white, and no NOAA ship I've ever seen looked like mine. That the chance it could have been anything but my ship was infinitesimally small.

There was a second Cutter Campbell, WMEC 790, built to replace my ship in the early '80s. Maybe that's what you found the data on?

We also got civilian ships to sink along with Liberty Ships by the dozens.

Imagine a world where it's not worth it to recycle steel off ships....
