    Isn't that what the purpose of... (0+ / 0-)

this whole thing?  Reducing the access to guns for those who do not need them?

No, it's about PROVIDING DECENT, DE-STIGMATIZED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES. ( Note the lack of the word " gun" in that sentence.

Umm, I'm thinking that maybe you're as gun obsessed as the NRA you hate so much?

    Good Lord.

I see your point.  I was not very clear.

The point I was trying to make was that this is the time to get comprehensive mental health legislation through congress because the republicans who are usually very opposed to anything that costs money and helps anyone are the ones asking for it.  Now, I believe they are being disingenuous but it will be difficult for them to cry and whine about needing mental health care instead of gun restrictions and then vote against mental health care.

I do not hate guns nor gun owners but I do not like the NRA because they are a gun lobby disguised as a sportsman's club and they have worked diligently to sabotage any form of sensible gun laws.  I own guns and have supported the second amendment many times here on this website.  However, Newtown has changed my thinking and I have moved significantly to the left.

Requiring a gun license like people already need for a concealed carry permit (and to drive a car), liability insurance to make sure you are responsible for your weapons and special permits for more deadly, high capacity guns like are olready required for automatic weapons should be the first step in reducing gun violence.  Effective mental health is an entirely different objective (not less than but different like healthcare) but it is an opportune time to push for legislation to improve it because of the current focus due to gun related violence.
