I retired three years ago and it wasn't any different then. As one really old timer told me when he retired, as soon as the Post Office became the US Postal Service, service went out the window.

Hang tough, don't believe in rumors of early outs, and know that it does get better once you do that last punch on the clock.

We hauled mail all weekend, some of the big mailers never shut down. And a three day weekend? By the 3rd day we had jammed the stations with destinating mail and were storing more at the plant and in trailers!

....when they were first implementing DPS. It was a clusterfark then, and they STILL make more errors than I would, even if I still drank!

There has never been a place where the Peter Principle was more apt!

The Postal Service couldn't organize a two-car parade. It's the Craft people who make it work. I'm sick and tired of watching six people who make 3 times as much as I do, standing around the 'corral' making sure WE are "efficient."
And not one of them has ever carried mail, with few exceptions. And those are lazy Craft people who couldn't do the job so they became Managers.

My reward is I get to spend about five or six hours a day with customers. Helping them as much as I can get away with, because if you spend "too much time" on Customer Service, you are gigged.

I have had dozens and dozens of Supervisors, 204-B's and Managers come and go. A few were good, most were and remain idiots. You know what's left after they leave?

Us. We make it work. And now the P.O. wants to cut our throats. Two years, eight months and I will be nothing but a vapor trail out of there.

Yup, remember the early days of DPS well, ended up delaying getting the mail to stations while they reworked it- so much for boosting productivity! Then there was the automated package sorters- they had to feed them hand picked mail of just the right size and shape to get them through acceptance trials!
