    Working from the premise - probably correct - that the board was strongly divided, what were they divided about? A member of our newspaper's editorial board asks:

    I’d be interested to know — but probably won’t since the Scouts don’t ponder things publicly — what were the points of disagreement. Was it a fundamental yes/no on whether to allow gay scouts and leaders — one or the other or both?

    Or was it over whether to defer such decisions to local councils, which could result in openly gay troops as well as “straight” troops. One could argue that leaving such policy decisions to each troop would take the national board off the hook, but would still result in a mixed message– that gay scouts and leaders are welcome in some troops and outcasts in others.

     Or was it a simple business decision based on the fact that a large number of  troops are backed by churches?
