been destined to be strikingly different from Obama the First.

President Obama has always been a very good President with the Potential to be great. With this appointment he clearly takes a step down that road.

(Yeah, I know about the Drones. Any analysis like this is, by necessity, comparative.)

    •  Also, anyone who wants to get overly negative (7+ / 0-)

towards Salazar doesn't know what the challenges really were, or wasn't paying attention. Three or four years ago I watched Salazar and Abbey onstage, in person, in Salt lake City take on a very large auditorium of very Right Wing Utah politicians. Man, talk about a hostile audience and those two far more than only held their own.

After eight years of extremely deterioriating conditions, we've enjoyed four years of improving conditions. Look back in four years more and I think that the trajectory and momentum will be far more apparent.

      •  Can't get much winger than Rep Rob Bishop (0+ / 0-)

of Utah, who makes Ken Salazar look like Edward Abbey.

It'll be interesting to see what Bishop, Chaffetz, Hatch, Lee and crew have to say about Secretary-designate Jewell.

I suspect their first comments will be how the U.S. ought to turn over all the federal public land in the state like Governor Herbert and they have demanded.

mention on your list, but you certainly have the big picture down perfectly.

Anyway, it will be an obvious failing (to me) if Utah escapes for four more years without this administration doing some kind of a Bill Clinton. Many of the easy targets have already gotten increased protection, but there is still some prime federal real estate left to work with.

          •  Tops on my list is Greater Canyonlands (2+ / 0-)

National Monument which President Obama has the unique opportunity to create with the stroke of a pen.

And you're right, Jim Matheson has not been helpful at all. Fortunately he doesn't represent most of that part of Utah any more, so maybe he won't be so much of a barrier.

But that's what every president (including Clinton) has faced: Congressional opposition, including members of his own party, in protecting federal lands. That's why the Antiquities Act is such a powerful tool, and one Babbitt urged Clinton to use, and is now urging Obama to use.

The boundaries of the proposed national monument are what the boundaries of Canyonlands National Park should have been in1964 when it was created!

      •  Sorry but (3+ / 0-)

Salazar was not our friend on any level.

      •  ya know.... (0+ / 0-)

I can never forgive Salazar and his role in the Gang of 14 Bullshit....I had known him since before he purposely started wearing his "boots" back in the 80's for political reasons...ya want to see what kind of person a political person is...keep an eye on what they do after they leave office...

His biggest failure was of course the BP fuck the gulf response...
